Sherriff Amenity Integrated Pest Management System
|
The Sherriff Amenity integrated pest management system utilises both the Garden Chafer Trap and Terranem - an insect-parasitic nematode, offering a unique way to identify a potential future grub infestation and provides an environmentally safe
biological control.
The Garden Chafer is a destructive pest of lawns and grass areas. Use of the unique early warning chafer trap, will indicate the presence of the adult beetle, and also has the ability to remove a percentage of the male population from the breeding
cycle. |
|
Once a potential infestation has been identified the biological control product Terranem (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora) should be applied. Terranem controls many different grub species in turf, including Garden Chafer beetle and Welsh Chafer beetle.
The window of application for Terranem is from mid July to the end of September, when the grubs are in the upper soil layer and soil temperatures are above 120C. When chafer grubs are present, early application will give superior control.
Garden Chafer Trap
Amenity areas such as parks, sports pitches and golf courses are often targeted by destructive pests such as the Garden Chafer beetle. The timing of bio pesticide applications such as nematodes or conventional chemical pesticides is critical to their success.
| The Garden Chafer Trap is a simple but effective product that can allow more accurate treatment timings against the larval stage of this destructive pest.
The trap will catch adult beetles and give an early warning of chafer grub activity. The trap also helps to reduce the number of egg laying adults in the surrounding area. Each trap is supplied with a powerful pheromone, which attracts male
Garden Chafer beetles.
The beetles are also attracted by the yellow vanes on the top of the trap, they fly into these vanes and drop down into the funnel trap underneath. |

|
The trap should be set in May and should be hung 50 - 100cm above ground level. One trap will cover 2000m2 or half an acre.
Biological Control
Terranem contains Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, to biologically control most species of chafer grub including the Garden Chafer Phyllopertha horticola and the Welsh Chafer Hoplia philanthus.
The nematode actively searches for insect larvae, it enters via a natural body opening or sometimes directly through the skin. Once inside the larva the nematode excretes specific bacteria from it’s digestive tract before it starts to feed. The bacteria multiply very rapidly and convert the host tissue into products that the nematodes take up and use for food.
The larva dies within a few days and changes colour from white/biege to orange/red or red/brown. The nematodes multiply and develop within the dead insect. As soon as the nematodes are in the infectious third stage, they leave the old host and start searching for new larvae. When there are no new hosts present, the nematode population will slowly decrease.
