| Lake & Pond Management |
| |
|
Introduction
Healthy looking lakes and ponds are important natural elements that add beauty and enjoyment to parks, commercial complexes and golf courses.
Maintaining the natural look of these settings requires special products that control the growth of aquatic weeds, algae and odours. This is especially important for lakes and ponds used for irrigation or those that have no aerators or fountains to add oxygen to the water. |

Algae
Algae can be a serious problem with lakes in amenity situations, causing discoloured water, green scum at the surface edges, or dense mats of green growth under the surface. If conditions are favourable (warm temperatures, high light levels and high nutrient levels), algae will spread rapidly and can harm aquatic life
There are many different types of algae that can cause a problem in slow moving lakes, from those that are suspended in water to others that spread across the surface in long fibres. Aside from looking unsightly, algae can lead to the depletion of oxygen which can have detrimental effect on lake & pond life.

Algae are tiny microscopic plants that do not have true leaves, roots or flowers like other aquatic plants. Algae are photosynthetic organisms that need light, water and nutrients to grow and survive. Algae growth is a natural occurrence in all water bodies, with some lakes and ponds supporting larger populations than others, depending on the water bodies individual eco-system.
One of the main causes of algae growth in slow moving water bodies is the abundance of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphates) caused by fertiliser runoff. Leaching of nutrients from highly managed turf areas and pastures can significantly increase nutrient loading in lakes and ponds, giving algae a rich food source to feed from.

Biological Nutrient Management
Biological lake inoculants such as Lakepak® WSP® can be used as part of a successful integrated lake management programme to reduce and manage nutrient levels in contained water bodies.
LakePak WSP works fast as it contains specially selected bacteria isolates suited for UK conditions. LakePak WSP contains billions of bacteria per gram (Bacillus.spp) which have been formulated to breakdown excessive nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates in water.
LakePak WSP improves the clarity and quality of the water by providing a much healthier environment for fish and water plants to compete and thrive in a natural way. LakePak WSP can be used as part of an integrated programme to reduce algae, sludge and odours which are common secondary effects of excess nitrogen and phosphates in water.
When LakePak WSP is added to a lake, pond or other area of contained water, the unique formulation will quickly colonize the affected area and help breakdown excessive organic matter, nutrients (nitrate and phosphates) improve water clarity, reduce odours (methane, sulphur) and restore a natural balance within the waters own eco-system.
LakePak WSP is a fully biodegradable, environmentally friendly product and is non-toxic to humans, fish, beneficial aquatic organisms, flora and wildlife.

Shading - Contained Water Bodies
Lake Colorant WSP® and Black Out are highly concentrated pigments, with dispersing agents, specifically formulated to add beauty to water by creating a consistent, uniform look to lakes and ponds.
Lake Colorant WSP and Black Out can also be used to create an unfavourable environment for algae development. Like all higher plants, algae require light to photosynthesize to produce energy to grow and survive.
The use of Lake Colorant WSP and Black Out will act as superior shading barrier to a depth of 1 metre, which will help reduce the amount of ultra-violet light available for algae development.
Integrated Lake & Pond Management Programme
The use of Lake Colorant WSP and Black Out as part of an integrated programme with LakePak WSP can provide an effective and environmentally efficient water treatment in contained water bodies.
By using lake colourants and LakePak WSP as part of a programme, you will create an environment that is highly unfavourable for algae, sludge and odour development.
This programme will work by limiting availability of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphate) to algae and also limit the availability of untraviolet light for algae to develop, allowing fish and other aquatic flora to thrive.
An integrated approach can:
-
Limit the amount of nitrogen available to the water body
-
Create a shading barrier to inhibit ultra-voilt light to pass
-
Break down hydrocarbons and sludge
-
Control unpleasant odours
-
Create an instant, natural looking water feature
