Chafer Beetles

Chafer grubs are destructive pests of lawns and grass areas. Large numbers of grubs cause grass to turn yellow and the roots can be completely consumed.

The grubs can also attract wildlife like badgers and birds, these animals rip up the grass looking for the grubs to feed on, causing unsightly and destructive damage.

Damage caused by badgers searching for the Chafer Grub

The Garden Chafer Phyllopertha horticola is one of the most common and damaging types of pests to turf and grass. The adults are about 9mm long with a green metallic coloured head and  thorax. The wing cases are light brown. The larvae are creamy white and normally C shaped with three pairs of legs near the light brown head end and are approx 10 to 15mm long.

Adult Garden Chafer Beetle

The Garden Chafer has one generation per year. Adult beetles emerge from the soil between May & June, normally at dusk. The eggs are then laid in the surrounding grass, which develop into chafer larvae a few weeks later.

Amenity areas such as parks, sports pitches and golf courses are often targeted by destructive pests such as the Garden Chafer beetle. The timing of bio pesticide applications such as nematodes or conventional chemical pesticides is critical to their success.

The Sherriff Amenity integrated pest management system utilises a Garden Chafer Trap and Terranem - insect parasitic nematode. Click the link below to find out more.
